What are the benefits of fundraising via eBay?

With 241 million users worldwide, eBay is a powerful fundraising platform that enables you to reach millions of potential buyers with a message and a cause. From one-of-a-kind, rare and can't be bought items to everyday practicals, Bay is well known for being the place to source the stuff people love.

The next time someone offers your organization an in-kind donation that you can't use, don't turn it down. Sell it on www.ebay.ca and use the proceeds to support your cause. You collect the proceeds from the buyers, and you are responsible for providing a tax receipt, if applicable.

If you're a registered charity, the first step to get started is to complete the Charity Registration and Promotional form on the site.

What types of charities can list on eBay and what guidelines must they follow?

All registered Canadian charities that provide their Canadian charity registration number and are in good standing with the Canada Revenue Agency are welcome to participate. Groups involved in the promotion of terrorism, hate, racial intolerance, or illegal activities will be disallowed. A registered Canadian charity may appoint an auction management agent to list on their behalf as long as a registered Canadian charity has only one auction management agent selling on their behalf at any one time.

Why can't I, or someone in my organization bid on an item we've listed in our charity auction?

Bidding by individuals with a level of access to an item's information not available to the general Community, or bidding that artificially increases an item's price or apparent desirability, is known as Shill Bidding.

Because co-workers or employees of sellers have a level of access to item information, which is not available to the general Community, they are not permitted to bid on items offered by the seller - even if their sole intent is to purchase the item.

Shill Bidding is prohibited on eBay. Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

  • Listing cancellation
  • Limits on account privileges
  • Account suspension
  • Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings
  • Loss of PowerSeller status

eBay strongly encourages sellers with employees to ensure that their employees are aware of this policy and the possible consequences of violation.
