What do you need to know about the car before you make an offer?  Use our handy checklist to make sure you've covered all the bases.

Learn about the car. Read the description thoroughly. In addition to information about the car and its condition, make sure you understand:

  • Terms of sale. Check just how and when the seller wants you to pay and collect the car

  • What are the payment terms?  How should financing (if needed) be arranged? This applies to both the deposit (required by some sellers) and the remaining balance.

  • What payment methods will the seller accept? Personal cheque, credit card, banker's draft or other methods?

  • Who pays for shipping?  What are the shipping terms?

  • What currency is the car being sold in (so you can factor in an appropriate exchange rate when doing your cost calculations)?

  • Is the car under warranty?  Some vehicles come with a warranty that can be transferred between owners. Read the item description and terms carefully for any warranty details.

  • Inspection. Before you make your purchase, you may want to have the car inspected so you know what you're buying. You can hire a third-party inspection agent to do the job for you if the vehicle is far away.

  • Vehicle History. It's always a good idea to check the car's history. You can make sure there are no outstanding payments, ensure it's not stolen and determine if there is a history of major accident damage. Sellers are strongly encouraged to provide the vehicle identification number (VIN) of cars they are selling. You can use the VIN to obtain a vehicle history report that includes information about past accident reports or financial problems surrounding the car.
  • Test Drive. If you're considering a local purchase, contact the seller to arrange for a test drive of the car before you place a bid.
  •
Get to know your seller. Check the seller's Feedback ratings, past transactions and reviews. Have you asked the seller for any missing information? If you have questions for your seller, make sure they are answered before you bid.

Decide how much you're willing to pay for the car. Check out Completed Items on the eBay Motors site for price guidelines.

Find out what the other costs of ownership are, like financing, insurance, fuel consumption and replacement parts. In addition to the cost of the car, be sure to consider the cost of shipping and registration. Remember, your bid is a legally binding offer to buy the car at any price up to your maximum bid amount. If the seller accepts your bid, you are obligated to pay.

Consider Buy It Now and Best Offer
Buy It Now lets you can buy the car immediately. If sellers display the Best Offer feature, this gives you the opportunity to negotiate the price online.

    Payment

Some sellers require a deposit from the high bidder shortly after the close of the auction. Payment terms should be spelled out in the item description. If they are not clear, be sure to ask before you bid. Most sellers will expect payment in full before they will sign over the registration. When the auction ends, make sure you have your financing information in hand (if applicable), and be prepared to pay the seller by the method specified in the item listing.
Safety Tip: Never pay for your vehicle via money transfer.

    Vehicle Registration
Once you have paid in full for the car, the seller will complete the relevant parts of the vehicle registration, sign it and send it to you. Take the registration form to a local Ministry of Transportation office in your province to finalize the transfer.

    Importing a Vehicle
If you purchase a car from a seller outside Canada, you will need to arrange for its entry into Canada. The easiest way to do this is to use an importing service, such as those listed on the Services page of the eBay Motors site (http://pages.ebay.ca/ebaymotors/explained/services/index.html).

If you'd like to handle the import process on your own, check out our Importing a Car from the United States Checklist for more details (http://pages.ebay.ca/ebaymotors/explained/checklist/howtobuyUS.html).
