Links Policy

When selling on eBay, you can place certain types of links within your item description to help promote or sell your item. However, if you don't see your link on the list of links that we allow in the Some Examples section, you may not include it in your listing. For example, you can't link to personal or business websites from your listing.

What's a link?
A link is anything that takes a user off the eBay site, including text, images, logos, or icons.  A link can be a URL, such as "www.mysite.com", or text, such as "please put a 'www' and a '.com' around my user ID".  These types of links are not allowed.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

  • Listing cancellation

  • Limits on account privileges

  • Account suspension

  • Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

  • Loss of PowerSeller Status

Some Examples

Allowed

Here are the types of links we allow:

Links from an eBay Store
You can include these types of links on your Store home or custom pages:

  • Unlimited links to your eBay items and pages

  • Links to an email address that members can use to ask questions

  • Up to 10 links to eBay Store pages of other members (with their permission) on your Store home page and unlimited links on other Store Custom pages

  • Links to pages off eBay that provide information about your store or service, as long as you're not promoting non-eBay items

  • Links to your "Add to My Favourite Sellers and Stores" page

Links to your About Me page
We automatically provide About Me icons, which link to your About Me pages, on your listing pages. You can add links to these pages, as long as you don't use language that promotes non-eBay items or websites.

Here's more information about linking to your About Me page.

Third-party acknowledgements, credits, and links
Feel free to include a credit (text, logo, or both) for a third-party company that provided a service for your listing, such as image hosting. Just be sure to follow these guidelines:

  • For text, you can have a maximum of 10 words and a maximum font size of 3. For a logo, you can use an image with a maximum size of 88 x 33 pixels. But only one of these options -- text or logo -- can be clickable to the company's website.

  • The credit can identify the service provided by the company, but it can't contain promotional material about the company.

  • The credit needs to link directly to a company page that contains information about the service provided for your listing.

  • The credit may not "flash" or be otherwise animated.

If your listing doesn't follow these guidelines, it may be removed, and your buying and selling privileges may be restricted.

If you're concerned that the third-party company is not in compliance with our guidelines, contact them directly.

Learn more about our third-party acknowledgements, credits, and links policy.

Links to photos of your items and photo galleries
Feel free to link to photos of your item. Your photo pages may even contain discrete links to other pages that offer non-eBay items. Just make sure the links don't describe or lead directly to specific items on the other sites. For example, it would not be okay if the page you link to with more photos of your item includes a promotion for iPods that are listed on another website.

You may also link to a page in which information relating to your eBay items is grouped in a picture gallery or similar format. As with the links to photos of your item, the page may contain discrete links to other pages that offer non-eBay items but may not describe or link directly to specific items on other sites.

Here's more information about linking to photos of your items.

Links to pages containing the terms and conditions of your listing
You can include a single link to a page that further describes the terms and conditions for your listing. However, this page can't include links to non-eBay pages and the information on your linked page may not contradict the information included in your listing.  Please be aware that the most important parts of your terms and conditions have to be included on your listing page including:

  • Shipping and handling information

  • Accepted payment types

  • Terms of payment (when payment is expected)

  • Applicable taxes

You can use a logo to link to your terms and conditions page, as long as it doesn't measure more than 88 x 33 pixels and doesn't use Flash or otherwise be animated.

Make sure your listing follows these guidelines. If it doesn't, it may be removed, and your buying and selling privileges may be restricted.

Read about our policy on links to pages containing the terms and conditions of your listing.

Links to descriptions
You can include links to pages that further describe your item, as long as the linked pages do not promote the sale of non-eBay items.

Learn more about linking to descriptions.

Links email addresses and Web forms in listings
You can include a link that opens an email client or web form for potential bidders to ask questions about your listing, but you can't include links from the Web form.

Your link can only be used to enable an email client or web form. It can't direct a buyer to another web page that promotes non-eBay items. For example, you can link the text "email me with questions," as long as the link opens an email client or web form.

Here's more information about linking email addresses and Web forms in listings.

Embedded videos
You are allowed to use videos in your listings as long as the video is embedded. You are not allowed to link from your description to a video.  When you include a video in your listing, the content and format must follow these guidelines:

  • You must be the owner of the underlying rights, including intellectual property rights, or be authorized to distribute it by the owners of such rights.

  • You can't use the video to ask members to use unsafe payment methods, such as Western Union. Here's more information about our accepted payments policy.

  • The video can't include software that harms or interferes with a member's machine (for example, a virus or spyware), uses it for malicious or unauthorized purposes, or violates a member's privacy.

  • The video content isn't required to be relevant to your item.

  • The video must deliver the content in flash animation format and be hosted by a site that takes strong measures to provide safe content. In an attempt to safeguard members, you may only embed video from these sites:

If you don't see your video hosting site on the list of permitted sites above, you're not allowed to embed your video in your listing.

Not allowed

You may not include:

  • Links to websites or pages that offer to trade, sell, or purchase goods or services outside of eBay.

  • Links to websites or pages that solicit eBay user IDs, passwords, or email addresses from members.

  • Links to websites or pages that encourage buyers to place their bids through a site other than eBay. For example, you can't mention "auction sniping" websites, because you have to use your eBay user ID and password. You can mention UnWired Buyer, which is a member of eBay's Developer and Affiliate programs, because their service doesn't violate this policy.

  • Links or other connections to live chat systems. The only live chat option you can include in your listing is the Skype option in the Sell Your Item form. You may include your chat user names in an item description, but not a link to chat. You may include a live chat link in your About Me page or Custom Stores pages, but not in your Store home page.

  • Links to videos hosted on other websites. The video services outlined above take strong measures to provide safe content. You may not post your own videos unless they are hosted at one of these sites.

  • Links to subscribe to non-eBay newsletters or mailing lists.

  • Links to websites or pages that host material deemed to be inappropriate for general audiences.

For more information about logos and links to websites, click the "Show" link next to the Additional Information section below.

Additional Information

If you use logos for any of the permitted links, they must:

  • Be 88x33 pixels or smaller.

  • Not flash or otherwise move. (The exception to this guideline is links to your eBay or Half.com listings).

  • Not represent, brand, or advertise a homepage URL outside of eBay, except in listings offering a domain name for sale.

For policies about specific types of links, see the "Related help topics" section.

Why does eBay have this policy?

Links allow sellers to provide more detailed information about their listings, and help buyers make more informed decisions. Not all links are helpful or safe. This policy ensures that sellers don't use links inappropriately, promotes safety, and provides sellers with equal advantages.
