Solving credit card problems

Find out what to do if you're having problems using your credit card on eBay, if you see a charge from eBay that you don't recognize, or if you're having problems with your PayPal account.

What should I do if my credit card is declined?

If your credit or debit card is declined during seller verification, when making payment, or at some other time, you'll need to contact the issuer of your card. Here are some things you need to know:

  • eBay will verify your account by placing a temporary $1.00 hold on the card. This is a common way of making sure a card is active. If you don't have at least $1.00 available on the card, it will be declined. This charge is a temporary hold and it will be released soon. It is up to the issuer of your card to release the hold.

  • Make sure that you don't have daily transaction limits in place that are less than the amount you are trying to pay. For example, if you have a daily limit of $100 on your card, and you try to make a payment of $150, it will be declined.

  • If the card is new, make sure it's been activated.

  • Verify that the billing address your card issuer has on file for you is identical to the one you are using on eBay. If you've recently moved, double-check that that your card issuer has your new address. For verification purposes, make sure that the name and address you enter on eBay matches exactly what shows on your credit card statement.

  • If you have two names on the card, or a business and a personal name, make sure you are entering the names in the same order that they appear on your statement. If you need to, use one of the address boxes.

  • You usually can't use a pre-paid credit card to verify your account. If you continue to have problems using a credit card to pay your eBay fees, you can make a one-time payment using another method.

What should I do if I see a charge from eBay that I don't recognize?

We have a team at eBay that investigates unrecognized charges. If you see a charge from us and you don't know why, send the information to our Credit Card Resolution department so they can look into it right away. For your security, please don't send us your credit card information by email. Instead, please mail or fax us a physical copy of your card statement.

Send your statement to:

eBay, Inc. Billing Department

PO Box 1497

Draper, UT 84020

ATTN: Credit Card Resolution

Or fax it to: 801-838-1979

Please include the following information in your letter or fax:

  • Your name

  • Your address

  • Your daytime phone number

  • Your email address

  • The date that the unrecognized charge occurred

  • A copy of your credit card statement showing the charge

Once we receive your information, we'll investigate and contact you shortly.
