Putting Store items on sale

Sales are a great way to promote items in your Store. You can create sales that are seasonal, for specific holidays, for specific categories, or just to clear out inventory.

Determining discounts

You can choose a price discount or a free shipping discount.

Fixed price listings can be discounted by a percentage amount or discounted by a specific monetary amount. For example, an item that you normally sell for $10 can be discounted by 20% or, alternatively, $2. This means the item is on sale for $8 in both cases.

Price sales can't be applied to auction-style listings. However, you can select a free shipping discount for any listing, including fixed price and auction-style listings.

If you select a free shipping discount, it applies to the first shipping service you selected when you listed your item. The free shipping discount doesn't apply to any additional services that you selected.

Note: All items with price sales can be discounted by 5% to 75%. The sale price of your item appears as a Buy It Now price anywhere on the site your listings typically appear. Price sales also show up for buyers with a special look (strikethrough pricing and the calculated discount based on the ordinary price you supply for your item) in the following areas:

  • Listings

  • Cross promotions in listings

  • Search results within a Store

  • Items I'm Watching section of My eBay

  • Watched Item Reminder email

  • Stores promotion boxes

  • Seller email marketing

Buyers see that your listings have a free shipping sale in these areas:

  • Listings

  • Items I'm Watching section of My eBay

  • Watched Item Reminder email

Creating and managing sales

You can create and view scheduled, active, and inactive sales within your Store in Markdown Manager. All sales you create are subject to the Markdown Manager rules below. Sales can be scheduled for a later date or rescheduled once they're over.

To create sales in Markdown Manager:
  1. Go to My eBay.

  2. Place your pointer over the Account tab, and then select Marketing Tools.

  3. Click the Markdown Manager link on the left side of the page.

  4. Click the Create Sale button and make your changes.

  5. Once a sale is created, you'll receive a success message. If you schedule more than 200 listings in your sale, you'll receive an email to let you know when your sale is created.

To edit sales in Markdown Manager:
  1. Go to My eBay.

  2. Place your pointer over the Account tab, and then select Marketing Tools.

  3. Click the Markdown Manager link on the left side of the page.

  4. View sales and click the corresponding sale name.

Promoting your sales

Promote your sale by sending a customized email to announce your discounted listings to your Stores newsletter subscribers. The number and frequency of emails you can send is based on your subscription limits and other eBay policies.

In the Promote your sale section, your first mailing list is selected automatically.


  • If you don't want to send an email to promote your sale, you can clear the check box for the mailing list.

  • A one-time email is sent to the mailing lists on the same date and time as the scheduled sale.

  • The edit your email link lets you edit the subject and message fields of your emails.

  • You can edit your promotional emails as long as the sale hasn't started.

Note: Once the sale has begun, the Promote your sale section no longer appears in Markdown Manager's Edit Sale page.

Note: If you don't have any mailing lists, the Promote your sale section doesn't appear in the Markdown Manager's Create Sale page. Take a step-by-step tutorial about setting up your email mailing lists. 

Markdown Manager rules

  • Revising the item price, shipping cost, or both for an item on the Revise My Item page removes the item from a sale.

  • Most sales are processed within an hour.

  • Items can be discounted 5% to 75% off the ordinary price for which you sell your item.

  • There are minimum and maximum durations for price sales. A fixed price sale can be 1 to 45 days. The minimum duration between sales is 1 day.

  • Free shipping sales on auction-style listings have no end dates. Sales on auction-style listings are valid until the listing ends.

  • If a listing is already on sale, you won't be able to add a new sale. For example, if your listing is on a price sale, you won't be able to add a free shipping sale to that listing.

  • If you have several listings in different currencies and choose to discount all of them by an amount (not a percentage), that discount is in the currency of the listings and won't be converted. For example, a discount entered as "5" will be CN$5 for listings in Canadian Dollars and US$5 for listings in US Dollars.

  • Your sale price must represent a discount on the “ordinary price” for which you offer the discounted item for sale.  The “ordinary price” means the price (excluding shipping and handling fees, tax and duty, as applicable), that (i) you or the market generally offers the sale item or one that is nearly identical to it, for sale to Canadians at, in good faith, for a substantial period of time prior to the sale, and the sale item must be offered at the ordinary price for at least 50% of the six months prior to the sale; or (ii) 50% of sales, made either by you or the market generally, to Canadians, of the sale item or one that is nearly identical to it occur at the ordinary price, in the twelve months prior to the sale.

  • The “ordinary price” must be a reasonable representation of the regular price at which most purchasers would be able to purchase such item in new condition, or in refurbished condition if the item is indicated as refurbished. You must inform eBay whether you have based the ordinary price on your own prior pricing or the pricing of other sellers in the market. You must maintain for your records a complete record of the locations, dates and times on which you offered the ordinary price to Canadians, or on which you found the ordinary price being offered to Canadians. On request, you must provide your record to eBay.

  • You acknowledge and agree that eBay may display a “% off” or “up to % off” on the Site in connection with the sale, to represent a discount to the ordinary price. Such “% off” signifies the calculated percentage difference between the ordinary price you provide and the your price for the item on sale. You acknowledge that eBay is relying on your representation of the ordinary price, and agree that you will be solely responsible for complying with all applicable laws related to the sale you offer on the Site, including without limitation, any applicable laws related to pricing claims. You shall be responsible for any fines or penalties that may be imposed as a result of non-compliance with any applicable law, including without limitation, any inaccurate or misleading statement of ordinary price.

  • Sales can be scheduled up to 30 days in advance and eBay keeps sale information for up to 15 months after the end date.

  • If you have bids on an auction-style listing, you can't add or remove a free shipping sale.

You can't add a free shipping sale if your listing includes one or more of the following:

  • Handling cost

  • Shipping surcharge (for UPS domestic services)

  • Freight shipping

  • Local pickup only

Limits to sales in Markdown Manager

Sales in Markdown Manager are limited in these ways:

  • The number of listings allowed to be changed in one day is 250 for Basic Stores, 2,500 for Premium Stores, and 5,000 for Anchor Stores. Changes include scheduling, editing, or adding listings to a sale.

  • A price or free shipping sale on a fixed price listing can be 1 to 45 days.

  • Free shipping sales on auction-style listings are valid until the listing ends.

  • A listing can be in only one active sale at a time, but a listing can exist in multiple scheduled and inactive sales. There must be at least 1 day between sales for a particular listing.

  • If you accept Best Offer for a listing that you put on sale in Markdown Manager, you won't be able to respond to offers automatically. Once the item goes on sale, you'll need to individually review all Best Offers for it.
