Other Updates
We're taking steps to keep eBay the number one choice for buyers and the most dynamic marketplace for sellers this holiday season. We're making it faster and easier for shoppers to find what they're looking for and buy with confidence. We're optimizing exposure for Fixed Price and Auction-style listings.
Seller incentives for offering Free Shipping
Competitive shipping has become an increasingly important factor in the ongoing health of the eBay marketplace. Toward this end, and in advance of the busy holiday shopping season, we're taking the following step:
- Special incentives for free shipping: We're offering major incentives to sellers for offering free shipping during the holidays. From October through December, for listings with free shipping we'll include a free Subtitle upgrade—or Value Pack for just $0.35—to highlight this benefit in your listing. PowerSellers will get double their Final Value Fee discounts. Also, listings with free shipping get an extra advantage in search results.
More relevant search results to drive more sales
eBay's Best Match search technology considers a number of important factors including relevance of the item, the seller's detailed seller ratings (DSRs), item location, cost, and shipping. We're making further enhancements to give buyers a good mix of the best Auction-style and Fixed Price listings on the search results page. Items within each format will be sorted based on the most appropriate criteria and then intermingled.
- Auction-style - "time ending soonest" still key. Along with item relevance, seller DSRs, price, and the time remaining is key for Auction-style listings. That means your Auction-style listings will continue to get an automatic boost in exposure as ending time approaches.
- Item Location - higher priority in search for all Canadian located items on eBay.ca. Regardless of the site you originally listed on, items located in Canada generally have a higher priority in search on eBay.ca. Shipping to fellow Canadians is advantageous for sellers and buyers. Other criteria such as price, shipping cost, DSRs, and listing ending time will still continue to play a role in the finding experience for buyers.
- Fixed Price - your listing's recent sales now factored into Best Match search results on eBay.com. Now, your listings that produce repeat sales can get a boost in search exposure. "Time ending soonest" is no longer a factor for Fixed Price. The best way to build up a "recent sales" advantage is to combine similar items in one multi-quantity Fixed Price listing with the new 30-day duration option included at no extra charge. As always, maintain good DSRs and price your items competitively.
See the FAQs for more information about how Best Match search works. See Best Practices for tips on how to make these formats, and search changes work for you.
Other announcements for Canadian sellers
For all Canadian sellers who list on eBay.com, please note some key changes on the US site that may affect your listings and sales:
- Limits on shipping charges in some categories on eBay.com: Starting in October, in Books, DVDs & Movies, Music, and Video Games categories, eBay.com will be enforcing maximum shipping charges. See FAQs for more details.
- Cheques and money orders no longer allowed on eBay.com: Beginning in late October, eBay.com will no longer allow cheques or money orders as payment methods on the US site. Only approved payment methods will be allowed. See FAQs for more details.
- New seller standards: Minimum 4.3 on all DSRs is required to list on eBay.com: Starting November 1, eBay.com will no longer allow the few sellers who don't deliver on basic standards of customer satisfaction to sell on eBay. Sellers will be evaluated on the past 30 days of DSRs. Sellers who've received fewer than 10 DSRs in the past 30 days will be evaluated on their DSRs over the last 12 months. Sellers with no DSRs will still be allowed to list. This change is being evaluated for eBay.ca and we will provide more communication regarding minimum DSR requirements to sell on eBay's Canadian sites in the future. See FAQs for more details.
See Best Practices and the Seller Checklist for more information about how these important changes affect you. You're also invited to participate in—or view the archives of—one of several webinars on eBay.com August 20-26.
