2011 Spring Seller Update

  Spring 2011 Update
Tips and Tools for Bulk Editing

In the ecommerce world, changes happen and they happen fast. This reality — combined with changes that eBay announces — means that most sellers need to update active listings from time to time.

Here's a guide to help you get started editing your live listings in bulk and some suggestions on what to do if you're having trouble.

The basics

What you can change on your listing depends on a number of factors:
  • the listing format you?ve chosen (Fixed Price or Auction-style)
  • the time until the listing closes
  • whether an item has had bids or sales on it
One thing that you cannot change under almost any circumstances is the listing format. You?re also very limited in the types of changes you can make to listings with outstanding Best Offers on them. It's best to ensure that all outstanding offers are answered (accepted, rejected, expired, or retracted) before you try to edit these listings.

To learn more about what you can and can't edit (and when) on the various listings formats, review this chart.

Choosing the right editing tool

  1. Bulk editing tool in My eBay. Located right inside My eBay, this tool is easy to use and can edit up to 200 listings at a time.

To edit live listings using the bulk editing tool, simply follow these steps:
    • Click "My eBay" at the top of any eBay page. You may be asked to sign in.
    • In the left column, click Sell.
    • Check the box beside those listings you want to edit.
    • Click the "Edit" button.
    • On the Edit Listings page, check off the fields you wish to edit.
    • Choose whether you would like to edit the listings individually (different changes to different listings) or in bulk (the same change applied to all listings at once), then click Continue.
    • On the next screen, edit your listings.
    • Click Continue, review your edits and submit them.

Now available: eBay's editing, relisting, and sell similar bulk flows have been redesigned to allow you to work on your listings in a familiar spreadsheet interface.

Look for an opt-in link on the existing bulk edit, bulk relist, and bulk sell similar flows. You can opt in or out during this test with one click. Right now, you can edit key fields like price, quantity, title, subtitle, duration and item condition. Many more fields and enhanced functionality will be available in September. We encourage you to try out the new functionality and send us your feedback. Look for the "Send us your comments" link in the new bulk flow to tell us what you think.

    • Under the Activity tab, move down to the Selling Manager menu and click "Active".
    • In the Active Listings table, either select individual listings or select all by clicking the box at the top, to the left of the word "Title".
    • Click the "Edit" button. (You are now in the bulk editing tool.)
    • On the Edit Listings page, check off the fields you wish to edit.
    • Choose whether you would like to edit the listings individually (different changes to different listings) or in bulk (the same change applied to all listings at once), then click Continue.

    • Click Continue, review your edits and submit them

Now availalbe: If you subscribe to Selling Manager or Selling Manager Pro, you can now try an exciting new advanced search functionality. Troubleshooting

Getting error messages back when you send your listings to bulk edit? Try these tips:
  1. Start simple. Read the error message to see which listings aren't working properly, then go back to correct the error. For example, if you've bulk edited 100 listings and two of them have a problem, the other 98 will update just fine.

  2. Double check. Are you trying to edit a field that you're not allowed to edit? Trying to edit an Auction-style listing within 12 hours of auction end? Have outstanding Best Offers on a listing? These are some of the most common errors in bulk editing. To learn more about what you can and can't edit (and when) on the various listings formats, review this chart.

  3. Compliance with eBay changes. If you're editing an older Good 'Til Cancelled listing, chances are that listing may not be fully in compliance with recent changes to eBay listing requirements. A common problem is listings that still offer money order or check as payment methods—these listings are not in compliance with the Accepted Payments Policy. You may need to edit other parts of the listing to bring it into compliance with new requirements.

  4. Narrow it down. If your edits are being rejected, try cutting down the number of fields you are trying to edit at once. You can also try reducing the number of listings you are editing at the same time. Both of these actions will help you narrow down the listings and/or edits that may be causing the problem.

  5. Ask for help. There are eBay discussion boards for most of the eBay-owned tools. Third-party tools often host their own boards as well. You can also contact us at any point for immediate assistance with eBay-owned tools. For assistance with third-party tools, please contact the third-party developer directly.
