Shipping services update

Upfront shipping information being introduced for US buyers. New shipping service choices and implications for Canadian sellers.

Questions about shipping - including confusion about the many different carrier services offered and time of delivery - are key reasons buyers contact sellers. That's why we're introducing estimated delivery times for buyers, beginning with US domestic buyers on eBay.com. Starting in September, shipping options and estimated delivery will be displayed more prominently using industry-standard terms on eBay.com.

This change has very important implications for Canadian sellers - particularly those who prefer to list on eBay.com.

HIGHLIGHTS

1. Standardizing Shipping Services to make things simpler for US Buyers

Starting in September on eBay.com, the shipping options offered to US buyers will be displayed along with estimated delivery more prominently throughout the buying process. At the top of the item page and during checkout, four familiar industry-standard service level terms will be used:
  • Economy
  • Standard
  • Expedited
  • One-day
All existing USPS, UPS and generic shipping services on eBay.com are being organized into these 4 classes, making it easier for buyers to understand available shipping choices regardless of carrier.

2. Delivery Estimates Provided for US Buyers for all listings created on eBay.com - Impact for Canadian Sellers

Estimated delivery dates will become associated with all US shipping services available on eBay.com. This includes the generic US shipping services popular with Canadian sellers listing on eBay.com. Canadian sellers may need to consider modifying their listings to ensure US buyers are seeing accurate delivery estimates for Canadian listings.

3. Three New Generic US Shipping Services added to eBay.com

In August, we're adding three new shipping service descriptions on eBay.com especially for Canadian and overseas sellers who prefer to list directly on the eBay.com site.

4. No changes are made to shipping services available on eBay.ca

For all the current services available for shipping to the US on eBay.ca, we'll continue to show the same generic message we do today, indicating that shipping time will vary for international shipments.

CHOICES FOR CANADIAN SELLERS

If you list on eBay.ca

Canadian Domestic Shipping

  • We aren't providing delivery date estimates for Canadian buyers on eBay.ca as yet. There's no change to Canadian domestic shipping services.

    Shipping to the US

  • For all the current services available for shipping to the US on eBay.ca, we'll continue to show the same generic message we do today, indicating that shipping time will vary for international shipments.

    If you list on eBay.com

    Shipping to the US

  • Starting in September 2010, we'll begin showing estimated delivery dates to US buyers based on the shipping carrier's published shipping standards plus any additional handling time added by the seller.

  • Starting in August 2010, we're adding three new flat rate US shipping service descriptions especially for sellers who list on eBay.com and ship from outside the US:

Flat Rate Shipping ServiceDelivery Estimate for US Buyers
Economy Shipping from outside the US11 - 20 business days + handling time
Standard Shipping from outside the US5 - 10 business days + handling time
Expedited Shipping from outside the US1 - 4 business days + handling time
  • Also beginning in August, existing generic US shipping service descriptions on eBay.com are being renamed. Beginning in September, these services will have delivery timeframes associated with them for the first time, as shown in the chart below. For items sold located outside of the US, all these services will be associated with the same delivery estimate (11 - 20 business days + handling time).

Important: For Canadian sellers who currently ship from Canada, list on eBay.com and include one of these generic shipping services for shipments to the USA, please take careful note of the shipping times that will be associated with these services for US buyers beginning in September. You may need to modify your listings and use one of the new shipping services designed for international sellers shipping to the US to provide accurate delivery estimates (see new services in the table above).

Current service nameNew service classificationShipping time used for estimated delivery
    Other (see description)Economy shipping11 - 20 business days + handling time
Standard Flat Rate Shipping ServiceStandard shipping11 - 20 business days + handling time
Expedited Flat Rate Shipping ServiceExpedited shipping11 - 20 business days + handling time
Important: These services will be associated with different delivery estimates for items located in the US. To review these estimates please visit the eBay.com announcement page.

To set more accurate buyer expectations, if you are shipping from Canada, you can also adjust your delivery estimates by modifying the handling time.

  • Handling time options include 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 days. This gives you the flexibility to create delivery estimates for US buyers ranging from 2 to 40 days using these four generic services on eBay.com

    Shipping to Canada

  • Delivery estimates will not be shown to your Canadian buyers at this stage, but please continue to offer specified shipping to Canada on your eBay.com-listed items to ensure maximum exposure to buyers on eBay.ca as well as eBay.com.

    TAKE ACTION
    • If you ship from inside Canada and currently list on eBay.ca, you have two choices for your US buyers:

      • If you want your US buyers to continue to see a generic message indicating that shipping time varies for shipments from an international location, then there's nothing you need to do.

      • If you want your US buyers to see a delivery estimate for your shipments from Canada, you will need to list from eBay.com to take advantage of one of the new shipping services to the USA

    • If you ship from inside Canada and currently list on eBay.com using either "Standard Flat Rate Shipping", "Expedited Flat Rate Shipping" or "Other (see description)" then consider switching to one of the new service descriptions that feature longer delivery times for US buyers.
      • Economy Shipping to United States
      • Standard Shipping to United States
      • Expedited Shipping to United States

    • You can also consider adjusting your handling time to further tailor your delivery estimates to US buyers (note that modifying handling time would also impact your domestic shipping).

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What's changing with the way shipping services are displayed on eBay.com?
    1. Starting in September on eBay.com, shipping options with estimated delivery will be displayed more prominently on the top of the item page and during checkout for US buyers.
    2. In these two locations shipping will be displayed using four familiar, industry-standard classifications: Economy, Standard, Expedited, and One-day.
    3. During checkout, buyers will be able to easily see and select their preferred delivery service from all shipping options you offer.
Why is eBay making these changes?
Buyers often do not understand the many different shipping services offered. Seeing shipping options and delivery times prominently displayed in familiar terms will help them decide what to buy and how fast they want it shipped. This will help sellers set the right buyer expectations, reduce questions about shipping before and after the transaction, and encourage buyers to leave better shipping DSRs.
What's changing about how and where US buyers will see the shipping options available?
Starting in September, US buyers will see your shipping options (Economy, Standard, Expedited, and One-day) along with delivery estimates for all listings created on eBay.com. These shipping details will be displayed.
    • At the top of the item page
    • In checkout - buyers can easily see and choose from all your shipping options
Does the estimated delivery time displayed to buyers take my handling time into consideration?
Yes. As always, delivery estimates shown to buyers are a combination of the carrier shipping time for each service and your stated handling time.
Will US buyers see delivery estimates for Canadian listings created on eBay.com?
Yes. Delivery estimates will be shown to US buyers based on the service standard of the US shipping service you select on eBay.com, plus handling time.
Will US buyers see delivery estimates for Canadian listings created on eBay.ca?
No. For all the current services available for shipping to the US on eBay.ca, we'll continue to show the same generic message we do today, indicating that shipping time will vary for international shipments.
What if I am not certain how long it will take my package to reach US buyers?
If you aren't certain how long your shipment might take to reach US buyers, you can show US buyers a "shipping time varies" message instead of a specific estimated delivery time. You can do so by listing on eBay.ca and selecting any shipping service other than the new generic ones, "Economy Shipping to United States", "Standard Shipping to United States" and "Expedited Shipping to United States".
How will this change affect Canadian buyers?
Starting in September, these changes will take effect for US buyers only. We expect to address Canadian domestic shipments and northbound shipments from the US for Canadian buyers in the future.
I am a Canadian Seller who lists on eBay.com. How will this change affect me?
If you ship from inside Canada and currently list on eBay.com a delivery estimate will be shown to your US buyers. If you are currently using either "Standard Flat Rate Shipping", "Expedited Flat Rate Shipping" or "Other (see description)" then consider switching to one of the new service descriptions that feature more accurate delivery times for US buyers.
    • Economy Shipping to United States
    • Standard Shipping to United States
    • Expedited Shipping to United States
You can also consider adjusting your handling time to further tailor your delivery estimates to US buyers (note that modifying handling time would also impact your domestic shipping).
How will estimated delivery be calculated if I use the new generic services?
If you choose one of the generic shipping services, the estimated delivery your buyer sees will be the shipping time associated with that service plus your handling time.
What are the shipping times associated with each of the new classifications:
    Shipping times are:
    • Economy: 1-10 business days
    • Standard: 1-5 business days
    • Expedited: 1-3 business days
    • One-day: 1 business day
What if I use the current generic options to specify shipping: Standard Flat Rate, Expedited Flat Rate or "Other"?
For items located in Canada, sold by Canadian sellers and listed from eBay.com, these options will be automatically renamed with the new classifications and will all be associated with similar delivery estimates (11 - 20 business days):

Current service nameNew service classificationShipping time used for estimated delivery
    Other (see description)Economy shipping11 - 20 business days
Standard Flat Rate Shipping ServiceStandard shipping11 - 20 business days
Expedited Flat Rate Shipping ServiceExpedited shipping11 - 20 business days

If you list items located in Canada from eBay.com and wish to offer more accurate delivery estimates to your US buyers, we encourage you to use one of the new shipping services designed for international sellers shipping to the US.

Note: The current generic services will be associated with different delivery estimates if items are located in the US. To review these estimates please visit the eBay.com announcement page.
How does this change help Canadian sellers with their Shipping DSR's from US buyers?
    Canadian sellers have a choice:
    • You can show delivery estimates to your US buyers by listing on eBay.com adjusting your shipping services and/or handling time in order to create more realistic up-front expectations of delivery estimates for US buyers.
    • You can continue to show a generic message to your US buyers indicating shipping times vary for cross border items. To do this:
      1. List on eBay.ca, and
      2. Use any of the current services availalbe for shipping to the US.
How will the shipping options be reorganized when I list on eBay.com?
The new shipping options will be displayed this way:

When you list, you'll see shipping services grouped according to the four service level classifications along with the carrier's published delivery estimates.
Are bulk editing tools available if I want to edit my listings?
Yes, you can edit your listings now with Mass Listing Editor, Turbo Lister and File Exchange.

In September you'll be able to bulk edit the shipping and handling time fields using eBay's enhanced bulk edit and relist flow but this functionality will not be available before the new shipping level classifications are in place.

This functionality will be available in time for you to add expedited and free shipping options for the holiday selling season.

Get step-by-step instructions for using editing shipping information in your listings.
What happens if my eBay.com shipping services don't align with the new classifications in September? Will I be required to update my listings?
Your currently specified shipping services will be renamed automatically in September. You will not be required to make any changes, but if your services don't align, buyers may see the wrong delivery estimates. That could have an impact on your sales and/or your shipping DSRs.
How can I make sure tracking information shows up for buyers in My eBay, order details, and when they go to leave Feedback?
To make sure your tracking information is included on all these pages, use a carrier service that provides tracking and be sure to upload the information to eBay. In addition to having the information on these pages, you and your buyer will also automatically receive a confirmation email with the tracking information.
    • The easiest way is to purchase your shipping labels on eBay or PayPal. Tracking information is automatically uploaded.
    • You can upload the tracking information manually in My eBay.
If you can't upload tracking information, you can mark the item as shipped in My eBay and a confirmation email will be sent to your buyer.
Will you include estimated delivery time on freight and on local pickup listings on eBay.com?
No. Freight shipping and Local Pickup will not include delivery estimates.
I ship using freight. Are there any changes for me?
For listings created using the freight shipping option (available only on eBay.com),, buyers will not be able to check out until you enter a shipping cost. Buyers will contact you to get information about the exact freight shipping cost of the item, helping avoid a poor experience for both buyer and seller if the buyer enters a null or incorrect shipping cost at time of checkout.

Instructions for updating shipping information in your listings

    Mass Listing Editor

Using Mass Listing Editor, you can edit up to 200 listings at one time.
    1. Start in either Selling Manager or My eBay and select the listings you want to edit.

    2. After you select the listings you want to have modified, click "Edit" to be taken into Mass Listing Editor.

    3. In Mass Listing Editor, select "Flat Shipping Service and Cost." At this point, you can elect to edit all listings at one time or apply changes to 200 listings individually. For this case, we are selecting "edit listings individually." For most sellers, this is the right approach to take.

    4. Click "Continue" and you will be presented with the shipping section for all the listings you selected. From here, you can change the shipping service for your listings. For example, you may wish to change from "Other" to "Standard Flat Rate Shipping Service."

    5. When you've made all your changes, click continue and Mass Listing Editor will verify your listings. There is a final confirmation page where you can review the changes. Click "Submit" when you want the changes to go into effect.

    Turbo Lister
    1. To get started, click the "Synchronize" button from the Turbo Lister menu bar.

    2. You will then see a pop-up screen called "Synchronize" that asks what you want to synchronize on the site. To revise active listings, select "Active and Scheduled Listings" and click "Synchronize Now."

    3. Turbo Lister will pull active and scheduled listings from the site. All listings will appear in either the "Active Listings" folder or the "Scheduled Listings" folder under "Listing Activity" at the left. Click on one of the folders to select the listings you wish to revise. For example, click "Active Listings" and select one or more listings for revision.

    4. To revise your listings, select the listings you want to edit and click "Edit" from the Turbo Lister menu bar. This will bring up all selected listings and from here you can make changes to all your listings at one time.

    5. In the Shipping Options section at the right in Turbo Lister, you can change the shipping services for all your listings. For example, you may wish to change from "Other" to "Standard Flat Rate Shipping Service." When you've made the changes, click "Save" and the listings will be saved with "pending revisions."

    6. In the Active Listings view, the listings you change will be shown in the grid view as "pending revisions."

    7. From here, click the "Synchronize" button on the menu bar and synchronize these listings to the site. At this point the listings that are on the site will all be updated with the new shipping information that you have just specified in Turbo Lister.
