Inventory issues and tips

Before posting a listing or completing a sale, make sure you have the item in stock. It's never good to run out of stock after a buyer has already committed to the purchase. If you can't complete a transaction because you are out of stock, it may impact your seller performance. Here are a few things you can do to avoid these situations:

Your listing has a duration of Good 'Til Cancelled, but you sometimes run out of stock

  • Select the out-of-stock option in My eBay > Site Preferences. When this option is enabled, your listing is removed from search results when you run out of inventory. When you add more inventory to the listing, it again appears in searches.

If you're not sure how many items you have available

  • Don't list any items, especially if you think you may be close to running out of stock. Always check before listing any items.

  • If you subscribe to Selling Manager Pro, you can track your inventory quantity and set up alerts to let you know when your products are running out of stock.

If you only have a few items in hand or you have a one-of-a-kind product

  • Avoid listing the item in multiple places—for example selling it on eBay and at another website or store at the same time.

If your item becomes unavailable

  • If you're temporarily out of stock and you're using the out-of-stock option on your Good 'Til Cancelled listings, set the item quantity to 0. Otherwise, end the listing.

  • If someone has already committed to buy an item, let the buyer know right away that the item is unavailable for immediate delivery. Let the buyer know when the item will be available for shipment, or cancel the transaction and send a refund.

  • To help avoid the situation in the future, enable the out-of-stock option for Good 'Til Cancelled listings in My eBay > Site Preferences and make sure that your item quantities reflect actual inventory available. When your inventory temporarily reaches 0, your listing is removed from search results but still remains active. When you add inventory, the listing is again visible in search.
