Payment Intermediation

We're simplifying the eBay experience for buyers and sellers.

Payment Intermediation

What is payment intermediation?

When they shop online, buyers expect to be able to check out and pay on the site where they're shopping. Payment intermediation means that eBay will manage the payments flow in the marketplace, and that shoppers will be able to complete their purchases within the eBay platform, streamlining the end-to-end experience for both buyers and sellers.

eBay has signed an agreement with Adyen, a leading global payments processor, to become our primary payment processing partner. PayPal, a long-time eBay partner, will remain a payment option at checkout for eBay buyers.

Benefits for sellers

Lower costs and more control

Most sellers can expect a simplified pricing structure and more predictable access to funds, and most can expect their costs for payment processing to be reduced after they transition to eBay's intermediated payment model.

A central place to manage your business

eBay is working on solutions to provide sellers with information about their eBay business in one place, including payment information, so that sellers can easily track and manage all of the transactions and customer interactions on eBay.

Greater buyer reach and improved conversion

By offering buyers more choice in how they pay, and by expanding payment options, we believe sellers will be able to reach more buyers and improve conversion.

Sellers don't need to take any action at this time.

The transition to full payment intermediation will be a multi-year journey. We'll begin payment intermediation on a small scale starting in the second half of 2018, expanding in 2019. By 2021, we expect to have transitioned a majority of customers to the new payment experience.

To enable intermediated payments for their eBay account, sellers should expect to provide eBay with some additional payment-related information, and to transition to a new relationship with eBay that includes integrated payment capabilities.

Sellers will be required to complete these steps in order to continue to sell on eBay, and it's anticipated that this transition for sellers will occur no later than one year after the expiration of the current Operating Agreement with PayPal—July 2021.

In the meantime, sellers can contact eBay at to stay up-to-date on eBay's payment efforts and timing, share feedback, and ask questions, or read our Payment Intermediation FAQ for more information.
