Many party board games test a player’s range of knowledge, with some more popular choices focusing on trivia and vocabulary. Regardless of the party board game you select, though, you’re bound to spend an enjoyable evening with family and friends when you gather together to play these games.

  • Trivial Pursuit: Trivial Pursuit is the game that puts your knowledge of trivia to the test. Each player rolls the dice and moves his game piece around the board. The colour of the square he lands on denotes which kind of question he must answer. To play, you must purchase the master game, which includes the full game and board. Then you can purchase add-on sets of trivia cards. Trivial Pursuit also comes in a variety of special editions such as 1980’s and 90’s Trivial Pursuit, as well as Star Wars Trivial Pursuit and Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuit.

  • Scene It?: Scene It? is a trivia game that uses movie clips. To play, just start the included DVD, get the board game ready, and let the fun begin! Look for the Scene It? James Bond Edition, Scene It? Disney Edition, Scene It? Harry Potter Edition, and Scene It? Star Wars Edition.

  • Cranium: In Cranium, each team tries to reach the centre of the board by performing different activities. Players choose a card from one of four decks, including Creative Cat, Word Worm, Data Head, and Star Performer. Each deck uses abilities like artistic skills, knowledge of trivia, language skills, or performance skills. The variety ensures that players stay interested and involved for a long time.

  • Scattergories: Scattergories is a word game that’s fun for parties or family game nights. Players have to come up with words that begin with a certain letter in various categories, such as ice cream flavours.

  • Balderdash: Balderdash is the classic bluffing game. Players are given an unusual word and they must make up a definition. Points are awarded based on how many players select a false definition as true. Beyond Balderdash expands bluffing beyond vocabulary to people, dates, initials and movie plots.

  • Ouija: The Ouija board has letters and numbers as well as the words “yes” and “no” printed on it. Two or more players place their hands on the pointer and ask a question. A mysterious, unseen force moves the pointer to return an answer and amuse all the players.
