How fees work

The information on this page is for most, but not all, item categories sold with auction-style or fixed price listings.

Fees are different for:

In addition to the fees described here, other fees may apply, such as seller tool fees, Stores subscriber fees, and PayPal fees.

Estimate your fees for a specific listing:

How fees work

There are 2 main types of fees for selling: basic fees and optional fees.

How these fees are charged depends on the category of the item, the selling format you choose, the length (or duration) of your listing, if you're meeting our minimum performance standards, and if you're a Stores subscriber.

We recommend that you review your invoice each month before paying your fees.

Insertion fees

When you list an item for sale, you may be charged a listing (or insertion) fee. If an insertion fee is applicable, you're charged one insertion fee per listing, per category, regardless of the quantity of items.

  • Insertion fees are charged to your seller account at the time of listing. Even if the item doesn't sell, you're still responsible for the insertion fee.

  • If you set up your listing to relist automatically, you're responsible for the insertion fees for the initial listing and each time your item is automatically relisted. You may end your automatic relisting early.

  • Insertion fees are flat fees and are calculated differently depending on the category of the item, the selling format you choose, and if you're a Stores subscriber.

  • If your buyer doesn't pay, you may qualify for an insertion fee credit.

  • You will receive one insertion fee credit for each auction-style listing for which you paid an insertion fee if that listed item sells (exclusions apply).

  • We may limit duplicate auction-style listings to encourage a positive buyer experience. If you list duplicate identical auction-style listings, you'll be charged the full insertion fee and any fees for optional advanced listing upgrades for each listing even if a listing doesn't appear on eBay for the full duration of the listing.

  • If you list an item in more than one category, you pay an insertion fee and any advanced listing upgrade fees for each category.

Good 'Til Cancelled listings

Good 'Til Cancelled listings renew automatically every 30 days until all of the items sell, you end the listing, or we end your listing. Insertion fees and advanced listing upgrade fees are charged every 30-day period. Good 'Til Cancelled listings count toward your monthly free-insertion-fee listing allotment. Fee amounts are based on the terms in effect when the listing goes live and when it renews.

See insertion fees for standard category listings.

Final value fees

If the item sells, you're charged a final value fee calculated on the total amount of the sale and are charged per item. In this case, the "total amount of the sale" is the final price of the item, shipping charges, and any other amounts you may charge the buyer. Sales tax is not included.

Even if the item does not sell, you're charged a final value fee if you offer or reference your contact information or ask a buyer for their contact information in the context of buying or selling outside of eBay. In this case, the final value fee is calculated on the "total amount of the sale" determined as follows:

  • If the item was listed in auction-style format, then the "total amount of the sale" is the auction start price, the Buy It Now price (if applicable), the Reserve price (if applicable), or the price identified between the buyer and the seller, whichever is highest.

  • If the item was listed in a fixed price format, then the "total amount of the sale" is the fixed price or the price identified between the buyer and the seller, whichever is higher.

The total amount of the sale is the final price of the item, shipping charges, and any other amounts you may charge the buyer. Sales tax is not included.

Final value fees for Below Standard sellers

If your account doesn't meet our minimum performance standards for the US region at the time of a sale, your final value fees will increase by 4%. This additional final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale and is charged per item, and is in addition to any standard final value fees that are applicable. We will indicate which listings are subject to this additional fee on both the View Account Status page and your invoice. You can see if your seller level is Below Standard in the US region by going to your Seller Dashboard.

Final value fees on shipping

Final values fees on shipping charges are calculated using the shipping service the buyer chooses.

However, when you offer an international or express shipping service and it's selected by your buyer, the way your final value fee for shipping is calculated varies.

If you list on eBay.ca

If you list on eBay.ca and a Canadian buyer purchases your item, your final value fee for shipping is calculated using the shipping service that the buyer chooses.

If you list on eBay.ca and a US or international buyer purchases your item, your final value fee for shipping is calculated using whichever service is less expensive, either:

  • The first domestic service in your listing that isn't express, or

  • Your international or express shipping service

For example, if a buyer chooses international shipping and you specified free shipping as your first domestic option on your eBay.ca listing, you don't pay any final value fees on shipping charges for that item. If international or express shipping is the only service you offer, your final value fee for shipping charges will be calculated on that service.

If you list on eBay.com

If you list on eBay.com and a US buyer purchases your item, your final value fee for shipping is calculated using the shipping service that the buyer chooses.

If you list on eBay.com and a Canadian or international (non US) buyer purchases your item, your final value fee for shipping is calculated using whichever service is less expensive, either:

  • The first US shipping service in your listing that isn't express, or

  • Your Canadian or express shipping service

Sellers from outside of Canada

If you're a seller from one of the following countries (China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam) and your item isn't located in Canada, final value fees on shipping charges are always calculated using the shipping option your buyer selects.

Final value fee credits

You're responsible for final value fees whether or not you complete a transaction with a buyer, but in some circumstances, you can request a final value fee credit:

  • When you and a buyer agree to cancel the transaction

  • A buyer doesn't pay for an item

  • You issue the buyer a full refund

See final value fees for standard category listings.

Advanced listing upgrade fees

You can tailor the look of your listing and add features with optional advanced listing upgrades. If you add advanced upgrades to your listing, fees apply.

Advanced listing upgrades are available based on the category of an item, the selling format, and the listing tool you use.

Advanced listing upgrades are charged based on the selling format you choose, the starting or Buy It Now price that you choose, and the duration of your listing.

  • Using a 1- or 3-day special duration for auction-style listings is a flat fee, in addition to any applicable insertion fees.

  • If you list in 2 categories, you're charged insertion fees and advanced listing upgrade fees for each category.

  • Insertion fees and advanced listing upgrade fees for Good 'Til Cancelled listings are charged every 30-day period until all of the items sell, you end the listing, or we end your listing. Fee amounts are based on the terms in effect when the listing goes live and when it renews.

If you set up automatic relisting for your item, you're charged the fees for any advanced listing upgrades you selected each time your item is relisted.

Learn more about advanced listing upgrades and how much they cost on our standard fees page.

Supplemental service fees

If you use supplemental services, charges associated with these services may be included on your seller invoice as fees.
