Using Calculated Shipping Costs

When you use calculated shipping costs, the costs can be more accurate, because the shipping costs are based on the seller's and buyer's locations and the weight of the package. Buyers feel much more comfortable purchasing items if they know the shipping charges. Since these can vary based on the buyer's location, some sellers do not include shipping charges in their listings As a seller, you do not need to guess the amount it will cost to ship the item across the country. Use the Shipping Calculator and let eBay do the calculations. You can list with calculated shipping costs using the Sell Your Item form, Revise Your Item form, Relist form, and Turbo Lister.

You can use the Shipping Calculator to review Canada Post shipping costs for various services and locations by clicking on “Research Rates” from the Describe Your Item page of the Sell Your Item form.

How calculated shipping works
Buyers feel much more comfortable purchasing items if they know the shipping charges. Since these can vary based on the buyer's location, some sellers do not include shipping charges in their listings, but this discourages prospective buyers, especially since many bids or purchases tend to happen in the closing hours of a listing, when there might not be enough time remaining for a buyer to contact your for a shipping quote.

With the calculated shipping costs option, eBay automatically calculates shipping and insurance rates based on your buyer's Postal Code, ZIP Code, or country. The calculated shipping amounts display in finding, and on your Item page, and are charged to your buyers during checkout.

Amounts charged for shipping
Canada Post shipping rates quoted by eBay’s calculator are derived by adding postage fees and fuel charges (obtained from advertised Canada Post consumer, non-discounted retail rates, along with applicable taxes on postage), plus handling charges. Our rate calculator is certified by Pitney Bowes for accuracy, but even so, actual postage rates can vary.

Note: eBay cannot guarantee that calculated shipping costs are always correct, as there are many reasons why they could vary. On rare occasions, shipping costs may be a little high or a little low. If you're worried that the cost will be too low, you can enter a handling cost to increase the shipping cost displayed to buyers. The handling cost will be included in the total shipping cost.

Using additional shipping services, such as delivery confirmation, return receipt, etc.
eBay calculates standard shipping and insurance rates for Canada Post. If you intend to use any additional services, such as delivery confirmation, proof of delivery, etc., you should include a handling cost to cover the extra costs. This cost is not displayed to buyers, but is included in the total shipping costs.

Weight of the package
eBay recommends using a standard shipping scale to weigh your item. Be sure to include the weight of the box and other packaging materials, as well. The closer you get to the exact weight of the package, the more accurate the rates will be. If you’re unsure, it is better to overestimate the weight.

Maximum package weight

For Canada Post, the maximum package weight is 30 kilograms or approximately 66 pounds). Individual services may have lower weight limits When a buyer purchases multiple items (for example, in a multiple item listing), the shipping calculator determines the total weight of all the items. If this is over the weight limit for the shipping service, the calculator assumes that the items will be shipped in separate boxes.

For example, if a buyer purchases 3 items that are 15 kg each and you use Canada Post Expedited Parcel, the shipping calculator will not be able to display a shipping charge since the total weight of the items is 45 kg (the maximum weight is 30 kg). In this case, the buyer and seller should contact each other to determine the weight of the items and the shipping charge. Once the cost has been determined, the buyer can enter the shipping amount when paying through PayPal or eBay.

Calculating Insurance
For Canada Post, insurance is calculated on the final price of the item using the Canada Post rate. If a buyer purchases multiple items, insurance is calculated on the total price of all the items.

Since insurance rates are based on the final price of the item, they only display once the listing has ended (for fixed price listings, they will show during the listing, as well). Insurance rates will display in the calculator, and when a buyer pays using any of the payment methods.

For Canada Post, insurance can be calculated on eligible services for items worth up to C$5000 for delivery within Canada, or up to C$1000 for items delivered to the USA or other international countries. If your item sells for more, the buyer will see the insurance rate for the maximum value. Buyers and sellers should contact each other directly for insuring an item over the maximum value.

Calculated shipping costs work with all payment methods, including PayPal
Shipping and insurance charges will be calculated whenever your buyer goes through the payment process on eBay.

Note:

  • For PayPal purchases, shipping and insurance charges can only be calculated if a buyer starts payment on eBay or pays from a PayPal Winning Bidder Notification email, End of Auction notification, Post-Sale Manager invoice, or Smart Logo on a single item listing. On eBay, buyers can click the grey 'Pay Now' button on the Item Listing, End of Auction email, My eBay or other places, or they can pay through an invoice you send.

If a buyer starts payment on the PayPal Web site, shipping and insurance charges will NOT be calculated automatically.

Changing the shipping amount once the item ends
If you send an eBay invoice to a buyer or you enter payment details in Selling Manager, the shipping and insurance charges you enter will override the shipping calculator. The buyer will be charged the amounts you enter. You can send an invoice from the Item Listing, My eBay, and the End of Auction email.
