Ending your vehicle listing early on eBay Motors

You can end a listing early to remove it from eBay Motors or to sell early to the high bidder or to another member for a price you've negotiated.

Note: The guidelines below are for ending a Motors vehicle listing early. Listings in other categories (including Motors Parts & Accessories) have different guidelines. Learn more about ending a non-eBay Motors vehicle listing early.

Before ending a listing:

  • Make sure that you have a valid reason for ending the listing.

  • Check that you meet the requirements for ending the listing. If there are fewer than 12 hours before the end of the listing, restrictions apply.

Reasons for ending a listing early

When you choose to end a listing early, buyers may feel disappointed. If you regularly end listings early, your account may be subject to account restrictions and other consequences. However, we understand that sometimes you may have a good reason to end a listing early. For example, if you discover a major problem with a vehicle you've listed.

You can also choose to end a listing early to sell your item to your current high bidder or to another eBay member with whom you've negotiated a price.

If you made a mistake in your listing, you may be able to change your listing or change your item price instead of ending your listing early.


Your ability to end a listing early depends on the amount of time remaining in the listing and whether the listing has received any bids.

Tips to avoid ending your listing early

  • Price your items carefully. While it's always best to price your items competitively, if there's a minimum amount you're willing to accept for an item, set that amount as the start price for your auction-style listings.

  • Check your listing before you submit it. One reason many sellers end auction-style listings with bids early is to correct errors in their listing. Make sure all of the information in your listing is correct before you create your auction-style listing.

  • Manage your inventory carefully. If you have only one or a small number of an item to sell, avoid listing the item for sale elsewhere. That way, you won't have to end an auction-style listing early because you no longer have the inventory.

  • Revise your listing to add more detail instead of ending it early. If you want to add pictures or additional details to your auction-style listings, you can often do this without canceling your listing.

  • Consider blocking certain types of buyers. To avoid ending auction-style listings early because you've received bids from buyers who don't meet your requirements, specify these requirements in your listings so buyers who don't meet these requirements will not be able to bid on your item.

How to end a listing

To end your listing early and cancel all bids or sell to the high bidder:
  1. Enter the item number into the End My Listing Early form. (You can get this number from your listing, your listing confirmation email, or My eBay.)

  2. If there are bids on your item, choose how you want to end your listing.

    • If there are 12 or more hours before the end of the listing, select Cancel bids and end listing early or Sell item to high bidder.

    • If there are fewer than 12 hours before the end of the listing, your only option is Sell item to high bidder.

    Note: If your item has no bids, you can skip this step.

  3. Select the reason you're ending your listing early and click the End My Listing button.

Your listing will end and will no longer be active on eBay. If you're canceling an auction-style listing with bids, bidders who didn't win will receive an email explaining that their bid was canceled and that the listing ended early.

You can also end your listing early to sell it to an eBay member who wasn't your high bidder. You can also use this option to sell the item to your high bidder, but at a negotiated price that isn't the same as the member's high bid. You can do this by ending your listing early and sending a Transaction Confirmation Request to your buyer. This will cancel all existing bids and Best Offers.

To end your listing early and send a transaction confirmation request to an eBay member:
  1. Click My eBay at the top of most eBay pages. You may be asked to sign in.

  2. Select All Selling from the left side of the page.

  3. Select End my listing from the Actions drop-down menu next to the listing.

  4. On the End Your Listing Early page, select Sell item to member and end listing early.

  5. If your buyer's username appears in the list of members who have bid or contacted you, select it and click the Send to Member button. If you don't see the member's username, click the send a Transaction Confirmation Request link directly below the list of members, enter the buyer's username and postal or ZIP code, and then click the Find Member button. The buyer's username will appear in the Member found box. Click the Send to Member button.

  6. Select the amount of time you want to give the buyer to respond to the request from the Request duration drop-down menu.

  7. Enter the price that you and the buyer have agreed on in the Negotiated price box.

  8. Enter any additional information for the buyer in the Comments box.

  9. Click the Continue button to send the transaction confirmation request to the buyer and end the listing. If there were other members that bid or made an offer on this item, they'll be sent an email that says their bid or offer will be canceled.

If you can't end the listing

If you don't meet the requirements for ending your auction-style listing early, your best option is to communicate with the bidders.

  • Before the listing ends: Contact the bidders, explain the situation, and encourage them to retract their bids. Or in some cases, you can cancel their bids.

  • If the listing ends and there is a winning bidder: Contact the bidder and explain the situation. If you and the bidder agree to not complete the sale, you can cancel the transaction in our Resolution Center.

Other terms

  • You'll still be charged listing fees (such as an insertion fee and any optional feature fees) if you end your listing early, even if you don't sell to the high bidder. If you want to change or improve your listing, consider revising your listing instead.

  • Sellers aren't allowed to cancel bids and end listings early in order to avoid selling an item that did not meet the desired sale price. This is considered to be a violation of our reserve price policy. Although there are legitimate reasons for ending a listing early, abuse of this option will be investigated.

  • When sellers list a vehicle on eBay Motors, they are also allowed to sell it locally, like in their local newspaper. If the vehicle sells locally, sellers are allowed to cancel all bids and end the listing early.
