Outerwear, Coats & Jackets Buying Guide

A jacket isn’t just easy-to-carry insurance against chilly weather; it’s a fashion statement encompassing a huge variety of styles and textures. From athletic jackets to wool overcoats and leather or suede jackets to faux furs, you’ll find all the latest looks, materials, and brands on eBay Canada.

Select the Right Jacket Style for You

Select the Right Jacket Style for You

There’s a wide array of jacket styles for you to choose from:

  • Shearling, fur- and faux fur-trimmed coats: Featuring both form and function, shearling, fur-trimmed, and faux fur-trimmed coats can keep you warm and looking stylish whether you’re on the town or in the country.

  • Wool overcoats: Keep the cold temperatures at bay with a rich, luxuriously textured wool overcoat. Available in short-, mid-, and full-length jackets, they add a touch of elegance to your evening stroll. Even more sumptuous than a pure wool overcoat is a wool-and-cashmere combo; find them from Perry Ellis, Anne Klein, and Cole Haan.

  • Contemporary jackets: Clean lines, edgy styling, and unexpected textural contrasts put the contemporary in these jackets. Bomber jackets, jean jackets, and corduroy jackets are a few examples that fit in this category. Juicy Couture, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Nanette Lepore serve up some stylish options.

  • Leather and suede jackets: Leather and suede jackets project a strong, confident, individual style that never goes out of fashion. Bombers and blazers in short- and full-length cuts and a virtual rainbow of colours fit every personality.

  • Performance/athletic outerwear: Greet everything from a springtime breeze to a wintertime rainstorm in sturdy and adaptable fleeces, athletic jackets, windbreakers, or anoraks. Velcro closures, storm flaps, and elasticized cuffs keep you warm and dry year-round. Excellent choices are available from Patagonia, Columbia, and The North Face.

  • Fur and faux fur coats: Ultra-luxurious shearling coats or fur coats of rabbit, fox, and mink keep the wintertime chill to a minimum, while faux fur delivers the dazzling look at a more affordable price.

  • Raincoats: When there’s rain, fog, or drizzle in the forecast, raincoats protect you from the storm at hand. Classic trench coats and hip-length toppers in several weather-resistant colours and styles are available from a variety of designers.

  • Vests: Always fashionable, vests are a fun and casual option on brisk days. Down-filled models keep things warm and toasty whatever the weather.

Explore Jacket Materials

Explore Jacket Materials

Every material has its own special characteristics:

  • Fleece: If you lead an active lifestyle, you’ve got to love the light, comfortable, casual feel of fleece. Microfleece is a softer version of fleece with a “velvety” feel.

  • Nylon: Sturdy, tough, and adaptable, nylon jackets are the jackets you can wear in any kind of weather. Windbreakers and ski jackets are fine examples.

  • Leather: Embossed or distressed leather or suede jackets of cowhide or lambskin put you front and centre. Embroidery, metallic accents, and unexpected colour options further display your individuality.

  • Microfibre: Twice as fine as silk, and with a finish that’s unbelievably soft to the touch, microfibre jackets are available in four supple varieties: acrylic microfibres, nylon microfibres, polyester microfibres, and rayon microfibres.

  • Wool: Wool isn’t just made from sheep or lamb fleece anymore. Wool jackets can just as easily be composed of luxurious cashmere, angora, or exotic camel, alpaca, llama, or vicuña.

  • Suede: Suede is softly napped leather. Ultrasuede is a synthetic form of suede.

Get the Perfect Fit for Your Jacket

Get the Perfect Fit for Your Jacket

Choose the ideal fit for your style:

  • Oversized: Try a nicely draped loose wool jacket to achieve a sophisticated oversized look.

  • Fitted: To achieve the fitted look, choose jackets with tapered waists or “A-line” cuts (jackets that hug the upper body and flow at the hips). Keep in mind that leather jackets are often cut smaller than other styles so if you’re considering purchasing a leather jacket, you may want to get it one size bigger than you normally would.

For more help, read our guide on How to Get the Right Fit, then consult our sizing charts to find the right size for you. Always check the item listing for fit descriptions and size charts, however, since they may vary across designer brands.

Buy Jackets with Confidence

Buy Jackets with Confidence

Before making your purchase, make sure you know exactly what you're buying, research your seller, and understand how eBay and PayPal protect you.

Know your purchase

Carefully read the details in item listings.

  • Figure delivery costs into your final price. If you spend a lot of money, make sure the seller will insure the item when it ships.

  • If you want more information, ask by clicking the "Ask seller a question" link under the seller's profile.

  • Always make sure to complete your transaction on eBay (with a bid, Buy It Now, or Best Offer). Transactions conducted outside of eBay are not covered by eBay protection programs.

  • Never pay for your eBay item using instant cash wire transfer services through Western Union or MoneyGram. These payment methods are unsafe when paying someone you do not know.

Know your seller

Research your seller so you feel positive and secure about every transaction.

  • What is the seller's Feedback rating? How many transactions have they completed? What percentage of positive responses do they have?

  • What do buyers say in their Feedback? Did the seller receive praise?

  • Most top eBay sellers operate like retail stores and have return policies. Do they offer a money-back guarantee? What are the terms and conditions?

Buyer protection

In the unlikely event that a problem arises during your transaction, eBay and PayPal are there for you.

  • Pay safely with PayPal: PayPal enables you to pay without the seller ever seeing your bank account or credit card numbers. In fact, PayPal protects buyers 100% against unauthorized payments from their accounts. Plus, with PayPal Buyer Protection, your purchase can be covered up to C$1,250.

  • eBay Security & Resolution Centre: Visit the Security & Resolution Centre to learn how to protect your account and use eBay's quick and efficient resolution tools.
